IT was the famous plunging black dress that gave her the nickname Daring Di. And yesterday the revealing dress worn by the teenage Lady Diana Spencer – designed by Welsh couturier David Emanuel and his wife – was sold for nearly £200,000 at a London auction. The black taffeta creation, the chiffon bow tie blouse featured by the Princess in Vogue, and the famous royal wedding dress, were all designed by Bridgend- born Emanuel and his then wife Elizabeth. The 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer, wore the black dress to a black-tie benefit event at Goldsmiths’ Hall in the City in March 1981 – her first official engagement with her fiance the Prince of Wales. The couple were attending an event in aid of the Royal Opera House development appeal and images of the royal bride-to-be stepping out of a limousine in the black gown with a plunging neckline made newspaper headlines and immediately established Diana as the most glamorous member of the royal family. As the royal wedding approached, Lady Diana returned the gown to the designers to have it altered as she had lost weight, but it was easier to make another and the original remained forgotten for many years. The dress, which had been expected to sell for around £50,000, was bought by a fashion museum in Chile for £192,000.

The designer said that“The black long evening dresses has the most interest. I hope people know about the other things in the auction because I think they are fantastic. Even if it’s a bit of old calico, it’s still important from an historical point of view. I am really hoping that a museum takes them and they don’t end up on eBay because I think they are historically incredibly important. Hence, you should protect your evening dress or wedding dresses in a better and safe way, maybe you will become celebrity one day, your evening dress or wedding dress may cost a million as well.
